Thomas Hardy wrote the novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" in 1981. It was set against a changing rural landscape as people start to gravitate towards the towns to escape poverty and a hand to mouth existence. A young lady named Tess D'urbeyfiled has her entire life controlled by fate.Tess's ideals and sense of individuality are continuously tested by a series of misadventures and accidents.
             Tess as an individual is extremely sensitive she comes across as not wanting anyone to be angry with her. Tess is seen through her purity and innocence that she brings to the novel and her constant belief is that she is a "blighted star" she often realises that if people were like her the world would become a better place. The situations that she is placed in result to other things that aren't her fault. We can easily see in her reactions how she is an innocent young lady who looks to make everyone happy around her and places her own well being last. Tess blames herself for the horse that was mistakenly killed when under her control and this gives us am indication that is caused by fate and the actions that took place later on lead from that one incidence. This is the first clue that Tess will put her family's welfare first despite her feelings of unease.
             Mr and Mrs D'Urbeyfiled seemed to rule Tess' life, and her being such a passive character she doesn't hesitate to travel alone to the D'Urbervilles family home "trantridge" to claim their fortune. Tess after the incident with the horse feels guilty and blames herself "she regarded herself as a murderer" her parents put her under emotional pressure, and she complies with her wishes.
             The first man that Tess encounters is Alec D'Urberville she already had doubts of him on this first occasion. When he started becoming to close to her she bottled up the courage and said,
