Not For Sale

We covered many themes regarding the story Not For Sale. However, the one theme that most interest me is Fatherhood. In many instances the role of the father is underestimated. We don't usually examine the struggles that a father deal with especially his concerns when raising a daughter.
From the eyes of the narrator, who is also the teenage daughter, we see her adolescent view of feeling unfair treatment by her father. In the beginning of the story when her mom is in the process of buy her the beautiful bed cover, she branches into what she feel is unfair treatment by her father. "...since it was the year when I was being denied everything by my father:" When she made the statement "(I was decent Puerto Rican senorita, not a wild American teenager)", you can almost hear her dad repeated some this to her often. At this moment you can she how her father held her to a high esteem. Good fathers often want to have a good wholesome image of their daughter. His role is more than just being provider, which in this story he is the sole provider of the family. Part of being a father who takes his responsibilities serious goes the added chore of security and protection. The father's protection is not only for his home but those that live there. Maybe the father feels right in overprotecting his family "the streets of Paterson, New Jersey, were to dangerous for an inexperienced drive -he (her father) would take me where I needed to go". The narrator is looking at situations through youth eyes and her father is view situations from that of not only a man's eye, but of that of a man's eye who once was a teenage boy. He knew the feelings and what his desires were as he was growing up. He understands the intentions and desires of young men in relating to his daughter.
