ESSAY
This essay will show the ups and downs of the novels Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and
I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. It will be proven that both these novels are linked in similarity
by alienation. This essay will also hopefully give you some insight in to the inner
working of both novels. The common link between novels is alienation.
Both Dorian and the robots share the similarity of being called many names due to their
differences. For Dorian it's his youthful looks. "There goes the devil's bargain" The
lady that states this has grown old in the time that Dorian has remained unchanged
(Wilde 163). The robots are also despised; they are disliked and in most cases hated
because of their superiority and different appearance. The people in the stories know
very little about robots, all that they know is that the robots are better than them in
virtually every aspect, and they hate that " Robie was just a machine a nasty old
machine" (Asimov 14). Mrs. Weston a character from the novel I, Robot and the story
"Robie" knows that the robot treats her daughter exceedingly well and would never hurt
her, but she also knows that the robot does a far better job in raising her daughter than
she ever could. She hates this and despises the robot for this fact, so much that
eventually because of her ignorance and jealousy she makes her husband get rid of it.
Due to society's ignorance Dorian and the robots are shunned. The robots are despised
because of their superiority and because of the common persons lack of knowledge "
Some little jigger will come lose and the awful thing will go berserk" (Asimov 9). Mrs.
Weston knows very little about robots and technology, and what she doesn't understand
