New World Order

In the book Lord Of The Flies by William Golding shows us as the reader how rules, laws, and other regulations are all forgotten that human nature will revert to a primitive state of being. The overriding theme of the novel is the conflict between two competing impulses that exist within each human being: the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group on the one hand; and the instinct to gratify ones desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one's will on the other. Through the symbols Golding is able to show the struggle of power, and the struggle of trying to stay civilized.

When Roger kills Piggy with the boulder, the conch shell is crushed into many pieces, signifying the complete demise of the civilized instinct among almost all the boys on the island. The conch was the boy's only way of order in their life and kept them civilized. The breaking of the conch signifies the destruction and demise of the boy's civilized life and conversion to a life of savagery and lives an un-civilized life. Golding is able to show us as the reader how a life with out rules, organization, and laws, is able to change the human nature of a person from being civilized to becoming its primitive state of being.
