After the technological boom that our society experienced in the last couple of decades, people are returning to some basic environmental values. People in more developed countries, particularly Europe, are more environmentally conscious than ever. Our planet is a great resource, but we can not exploit it until its disappearance. Our planet should be preserved, and resources should be utilized, but with caution. Pollution is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has caused many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. When I think of pollution the corporate America is my greatest concern. I believe that the oil corporations, the steel industry, the automobile industry etc are the biggest polluters in today's society.
             Environmentally, the oil and gas industry is a dirty business. From the point of extraction to combustion, oil destroys perfect wild lands, pollutes the air and damages fragile marine ecosystems. According to Neil Jacoby, the author of the book The Polluters: Industry or Government? 'The burning of fossil fuels such as coal has profound implications for the environment. Coal pollutes the environment at all points in its commercial life cycle, from mining to combustion. Unregulated disposal practices from coal mining contaminate drinking water and nearby land. Toxins such as arsenic, mercury, chromium and cadmium are released into unlined ponds and landfills, leach into groundwater and ultimately contaminate drinking water' (21). The fact that bothers me the most is that these polluters are sponsored by the U.S government. Energy legislation supported by the Bush administration and awaiting in Congress would provide more than $33 billion in taxpayer handouts to polluting energy companies. I think that is outrageous.
