Corey 49). It is only a matter of time before that the new technology of bovine somatotropin is as accepted as widely as pasteurization or homogenization.
The simple truth of the reason for the usage of bovine somatotropin is the economic benefits that a farmer encounters when using the product. Bovine somatotropin is made available to the public through Monsanto, and is marketed under the trade name of Posilac. According to Monsanto, "The benefit of Posilac is its ability to increase milk production significantly and, in doing so, to lower farm fixed costs over units of milk produced" (Monsanto 1). It is widely accepted that cows supplemented with bST will experience an increase in milk production. In a study published in the Journal of Dairy Science the "average test day-derived 305-d milk yield for control cows during the study was 10,247 kg, while average milk yield for cows treated with bST was 11,179 kg" (Collier et al. 1101). It is more economically efficient for a dairy to utilize bST due to the increase of profits that are experienced. The use of Posilac requires for there to be no capital investment, and the fixed costs of milk production remain unchanged. The only cost that is associated with using Posilac, according to Monsanto, is the $5.80 shot that has to be given every fourteen days, and an increase in feed intake that translates into $0.035 per pound of milk increase (Monsanto 1). Studies have shown that "Milk production can increase from 5 to 15 lbs/cow/day, and that Posilac can extend the lactation of cows" (1). The increase in milk production causes a greater proportion of feed to be used to produce milk, and "This increases the efficiency of feed utilization (5 to 15%)" (Cooker et al. 2). T
