Biography of Jerome David Salinger

             Jerome David Salinger, author of one of the more controversial novels in his time,
             was born on January 1st, 1919 in New York City. He was born to a Jewish father who was a successful importer of cheese and his mother was a Scottish-Irish house wife. Many speculate that his heritage was the main reason for his distant relationship with his father. While growing up, Salinger flunked out of a few private schools. This prompted his father to send JD to Valley Forge Military Academy in an attempt to instill more discipline into his sons' life. After graduation JD had brief enrollments at both Cambridge University and NYU before deciding to devote himself entirely to writing. By 1940 Salinger had published many short stories in periodicals.
             JD was a very eccentric person and he soon became bored with his chosen lifestyle, which prompted him to join the Military via the draft. While serving in the army, Salinger was sent overseas to fight in World War II, where was actually involved in the invasion of Normandy. He also witnessed 75% of his infantry unit get killed in the Battle of Hurtgenweald. Salinger would eventually be discharged from the army in 1946 and continue on with the life he had left behind. Despite the brief interruption due to the war, Salinger was able to publish 35 short stories in the Saturday Evening Post and the New Yorker between 1940 and 1965. Two of his better known short stories were "For Esme with love and Squalor" (1950) and "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" (1948) which were both published in the New Yorker
             Although JD Salinger is a very reclusive person and details about his life are scarce, it is widely known that he incurred many problems in his love life.
