expand their estates. Those born into slavery were the more ethnically diverse people who were taken in wars and raids. Some of these slaves were known as house slaves. They were given the family name and treated as junior members of the family. Other slaves were treated very harsh and were sold and traded at will. Until the late 19th century, Wolof rulers played a key part in the slave trade, directing slave raids and selling captured individuals from inland people to the Europeans on the coast. The artisans were people who live by their trade. This includes blacksmiths, leather workers, woodworkers, weavers, and griots.
In 1958, Senegal became a self-governing member within the French community. To date, Senegal retains strong cultural and political ties with its former colonizer. Senegal has been committed to maintaining strong bonds with France.
Since 1978, when a second party (and later multiple parties) was legalized, Senegal has been moving down a steady path to political maturation. In 1988, numerous incidents of violence during the presidential elections led to opposition demands for political reform including the legalization of multiple parties and the creation of a truly independent electoral commission. In 1991, the legislature approved several amendments to the constitution; the most significant of which were the restoration of the post of prime minister and the procedure for the election of the president.
