The Great Gatsby: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

             "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel about achieving and losing the "American Dream." In the Great Gatsby, the dream is that anyone can gain happiness by being wealthy and having power. To gain his happiness Jay Gatsby attempts to get the love that he once had before, of his first love, Daisy. The only problem with Jay's dream is that Daisy was already married. Gatsby's personal dream symbolizes the bigger American Dream "Life, Liberty, and The pursuit of happiness". Jay Gatsby lives for the past. In devotion to his true love, he devotes his life trying to regain it and dies because of it. In the past, Jay had a love affair with a young rich, girl, Daisy. Daisy and Jay had fallen in love with each other knowing that they could never be together because of the difference in their social classes. During their relationship, Jay was sent off to war. And when he returned from the war, Jay found out that Daisy had married a rich man by the name of Tom Buchanan. Jay then spends his life working to get wealthy to reach her social class, in hope that one day he can marry her and once again have the happiness that he once had. His love for Daisy was not possible in society because he was a poor young man. He had nothing going for him. Gatsby knew he that at that time a relationship was impossible with Daisy due to his low social class. Gatsby became determined to fill that gap between them. He did reach the monetary requirements to love her, but he had focused too much on money and power the previous years of his life. He wanted his love with Daisy to grow. But to his demise, he had lost the ability to love. He no longer had the morality or the ability to handle a loving relationship. Society is broken down into several different social groups by their financial status.
