Cancer Prophecies

             Cancer, the untamed disease that infects our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. Doctors tell you if you eat certain food items and vitamins that it can be prevented. Do you believe them? You hear about it on television, the radio, and just about every other form of media we have in the world today. When you hear about it you sit and think, "Well surely this won't happen to me or anyone I know." It can be caught in your colon, prostate, lungs, breast and every other anatomical part of the human body. Think it won't happen all you want. I had to find out the hard way.
             In the winter of 1997 while sitting on my couch the day after Christmas and playing the video gaming system my parents just purchased for me I hear my mom say, "Honey, can you pause the game for me please. You and you sister need to listen to what your father and I have to say." At this point I was trying to decipher what this could be about by picking up on their facial expressions and the tone of their voices. I had ruled out divorce because my parents have always gotten along. So I sat puzzled as to what this interruption of my ultimate gaming experience was about. Little did I know I was just about to hear the most shocking and life altering news of my life. My mothers exact words were, "I went to the doctor last week..."She had to pause for a moment to clear the condensation that had compiled in the corners of her eyes. "They had to test me for cancer and the results came out positive. They found cancer cells in my lower back and in my breast." Then reality hit me like I had fallen on the tracks of a racing subway car. Never had I thought that the verbal form of the English language could impact me so much and become so life altering.
