There are those who spend their whole lives trying to become wealthy and there are others who are happy with what they have. Berl and Berlcha were two old Jewish peasants who lived in the small village of Lentshin. Everything they needed was provided for them in a way such that money was unnecessary. Samuel, their son, left his home at the age of 15 and later returned as a wealthy nobleman. He had ventured off to the 'mysterious' land of America to find a job in order for him to become rich and later help the villagers. When he returned as a nobleman, his parents didn't want anything to do with his money because of the fact that they believed they had enough to provide their essential needs.
             In the beginning of the short story, the old Jewish couple, Berl and Berlcha, had been driven from their homes in Russia and had settled in Poland. In Poland, they had devout religious beliefs where they believed that everything would be given to them that they needed. They had their basic needs which were a garden, a cow, and a goat. Also Berlcha sold chickens and eggs, giving them enough money to buy flour for bread. For eighty years, these people learned to live with what they had and everything else seemed to be unnecessary. There had been a rumor throughout the village that their son, Samuel, had become a millionaire in the United States. He would send a money order to Berl every month where Berl would cash in the money and hide it under his bed. Berl had no
             use for the money because, once again, he knew they he didn't need it. In one instance there had been an example stating that some of the more prosperous villagers had kerosene lamps, but Berl and Berlcha didn't believe in "newfangled objects."
