Within those fifty-one wins, thirty-one of them were by knock out (espn.go.com). When Rubin left the Army, he got back into an old habit of the troublesome life. He was convicted for being part of two robberies, and sent to jail for another four years. Rubin spent most of his time in jail fist fighting with other cellmates. After he got out, he started to pursue his boxing career (espn.go.com).
             Rubin was a very good boxer even before he became pro. While in amateur boxing he knocked out thirty-six opponents before he finally made his professional debut. His pro-debut was on September 22, 1961, at Annapolis against Pike Reed. Rubin won the fight in a four round decision. Then in his next fourteen fights he knocked out eleven of them. At 5-foot-8 Rubin did not look like a middleweight. He had a very solid frame that showed that he really was a middleweight, along with his record. By the age of twenty-five Rubin was a fixture on national T.V. Rubin made his headline debut on October 27, 1962 with a sixty-nine second knockout against Florentino Fernandez (espn.go.com). Rubin was known for his raw power and his ability to unleash one powerful blow after another. After Rubin was voted 'Fighter of the Year,' he wanted to fight Joe Giardello.
