The mind is a very powerful tool and plays a huge role in a person's life especially in these two characters. One character is from "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce and the other in "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Although their particular situations differ between each character, one thing is constant, the affects of their mind upon their circumstances.
             The first character to be discussed is Peyton Farquhar in "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Peyton is about to be hanged for treason. It was at this moment that a voyage into his mind begins. The other character in "The Yellow Wallpaper" is the narrator, whose name I believe to be Jane. Jane, on the other hand, is trying to recover from being sick, although her sickness is not a virus or infection, but a metal state of illness. She is advised to stay in a room for rest and fresh air to aid in her recovery. There in that room covered with yellow wallpaper, is where her mind journey Begins.
             The first time Peyton's mind began to wander was before the order to hang him was executed. With his eyes closed, thinking about his wife and children, his thoughts wandered to reflections upon the water, fog over the stream, and soldiers on the bridge. Breaking through the thought of his loved ones was the sound of "a sharp, distant, metallic percussion like the stroke of a blacksmith's hammer upon the anvil." (514) His ears hurt as if being stabbed with a knife. "What he heard was the ticking of his watch." (514) The faint sound from his watch was amplified by his mind, making something out of nothing.
             Jane's first experience was two weeks into her stay in the room with yellow wallpaper. "This paper looks to me as if it knew what a vicious influence it had. There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at yo...
