Eros is the god of Love. His mother is Aphrodite, goddess of love. Aphrodite is called "the mother of the Twin Loves" (Eros & Anteros). Even though a lot of representations of Eros are a man or a boy Eros is neither a male nor a female. Some say that Eros is not even a God. Some call him "abstraction," or "emotion," or "a property inherit in ourselves," or "an object of our desire." He (or she) is able to have the qualities of what ever he (or she) wants. He can make himself ugly, or gorgeous, be stupid or intelligent. His influence on people who are in love are compared to wine because wine can be wonderful, but with great force can be harmful. It is written: "... the Love-god, golden-haired, stretches his charmed bow with twin arrows and one is aimed at happiness, the other at life's confusion." [Euripides, Iphigenia in Aulis 549] Because of Love, we have intimacy and might avoid separation, enjoy friendship, and avoid hate. He has also been described as a poet or composer. When Eros gets a hold of anybody that person becomes a great poet or composer, helping the creativity that they had since they were born. When Apollo invented archery, and medicine and divination, or when the MUSES created music, or when Hephaestus worked on his metals, or when Athena was weaving, or when Zeus was guiding gods and men, they did all these things in such a way that "they could be judged to be the disciples of Love, attaching themselves to beauty, and having no concern with ugliness."
