· Finch family: - Southerners – happy family. Atticus is related to everyone in Maycomb by blood or marriage – inbreed society. Maycomb: - 20 miles form finches landing – hot climate – old, tired, slow moving town. Very traditional.
· Stands up for himself – got an 'attitude' likes to boast and makes lots of things up.
· He got into a 'bad gang', went joy riding and locked a policeman in his own cell so Boo's father made him stay in the house all the time so he could cause no trouble.
· It is surrounded by mystery and there is a strange and fascinating story that goes with the house. It is different from all other houses in Maycomb in that it is always shut. To young children, buildings such as this present themselves as a challenge.
· The narrative voice is Scout's and because she is looking back on past things, the viewpoint is that of someone who is now older and wiser. It puts events in a logical order and often speculates on unwise actions.
· Years previous to this point in the story, Scout spent lots of time in the tree house watching the older children in the school yard having fun and playing games and now all she wants to do is join in.
· Jem does not want scout to embarrass him in front of his friends. This is typical because older siblings are often conscious about the image and like to show their independence and freedom.
· In general she is a good teacher because she is doing her job at the required level of difficulty however when it comes to students like Scout who is educationally advanced for her years then she becomes a bad teacher because she does no recognise the talent and exploit it.
· Calpurnia is a Negro housemaid in the Finch household. She cooks, cleans and generally takes all the roles that the woman of the house normally would.
