Compare and Contrast with St. John and Mr. Edward Fairfax Ro

             These two characters are nearly opposite when it comes to wealth. St. John is a middle-class person who doesn't have a lot of money, but has enough to feed himself and his family. The explanation for this is that St. John is clergyman, and it is know that in the days of this novel, people of the church didn't get a lot of money. Mr. Rochester, on the other hand, is very wealthy. But he didn't earn all that money. He was wed forcefully to Bertha Mason, whose family was unbelievably rich. He now regrets having married Bertha Mason.
             When it comes to love, the two characters are different and alike in many ways. St. John thinks love is service to God. He wants to marry Jane so she can go to India with him and convert the people there to Christianity. It is plainly seen that St. John doesn't have any passionate love for Jane, only brotherly love. Mr. Rochester is madly in love with Jane, very passionately. Jane also loves Mr. Rochester. This type of love is true love, not based on looks or what the person is on the outside, but what the person is on the inside. However, their affair breaks up when Jane learns Mr. Rochester is a bigamist. She forgives him but she can't go back to him. Only when Bertha dies can they be back together again.
             Physically, the characters are nearly opposite. Mr. Rochester is a stout, hairy man who is very old to be having a love affair with Jane. He is not very good looking, but ladies still admire him for his wealth and personality. St. John is a medium-sized man who is still young. He is very good looking and the type of person who any lady would go for.
             Personality wise, the two characters are very different. Rochester is a stern and loud man and he is so impatient when others take his orders. Jane likes him for those qualities.
