Lord of the Flies

             Gather together the references to the symbols of order and accepted values: The conch, the choir cloaks, the shelters and clocks. How are they used?
             The conch: When the conch is found by piggy and Ralph it is used to gather all the kids and have a meeting. Before Jack splits from the group The conch is used to call meetings and is a ,sigh or symbol that someone wants to talk. It is also used as a sign of leadership and authority. It also is a sigh of civilization and has the idea of that the rules still apply.
             The choir cloaks: The cloaks are used to symbolize that those kids are apart of a group, in this case apart of a school choir. They are described in the book as 'eccentric clothing'.
             The shelters: The shelters were built by the boys, mainly Ralph, Simon, and piggy. They were built to give to younger boys a more secure feeling and a more homely feeling. They were used to hide in when they found the beast.
             The clocks: The clocks were also used to make a more homely feeling. They were first thought of by piggy and were used to get a bit of order back into the group by knowing what the time was. In the end Piggy's plan failed and the boys were becoming more like savages and forgetting old habits.
             What impression of piggy do you get in the book: 'the true, wise friend' or ' naive, short sighted'? Support your answer.
             In the novel 'Lord of the flies' I thought that Piggy was the 'true, wise friend' because, although no one really acknowledges it, Piggy is quite smart and sensible. He also shows loyalty to Ralph, even after he tells the other boys that his name is Piggy. Piggy nearly always has answer to everything but most of the time the other boys don't listen to him because he is just the 'fat boy' with asthma and glasses.
