Imagine the world if we did not have nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is a key part to communicating and is often taken for granted and overlooked. This seems to be very easy to do given that people are virtually communicating nonverbally 100% of the time and often do it on a subconscious level. The world would be a more organized and cooperative place if we paid greater attention to the most frequently used type of communication.
             There are many different types of nonverbal communication that can help avoid misunderstandings. One very important one is facial expressions. "your face is probably the most expressive part of your body and one of the most important focal points for nonverbal communication." (Stewart 131). Take a situation where you and a friend are talking. You say, "hi, what is up." In most cases upon doing this you will also wave or make some type of gesture or most definitely a facial expression. The facial expression you make is often not one you are consciously controlling. Maybe it's that your facial expression will reflect your mood at the time and you will have a scowl on your face. This may give the other person the wrong impression and turn them off to the whole conversation. In the same situation if you consciously think of the nonverbal communication occurring you could shape your face to how you really feel about seeing that person. Often our expressions can be wrong for the time and misleading to the other person. It is very important to make conscious decisions about how you approach your nonverbal communication.
