             The idea that there would be no moral law without the belief in the existence of a higher being is utterly ridicules. Each day that passes more and more people are converting over to the atheist beliefs that there is no higher power and that this life is all we have. Do you see them going out robbing stores and killing the shop owners each chance they get? Nope, didn't think so. We each have our own minds, which are each capable of building our own unique moral code which can be influenced by outside forces, such as religion; but when it all comes down to it, we are the makers of our morals. Not a single one of us can sit and listen to someone tell us a list of wrongs and rights and agree with each and every one.
             One person believes that abortion is murder and another believes that it's the protection of a life already in progress and occasionally even one to come. No one can tell us that either choice is right or wrong, it's up to us to decide. It's the same with crime. God, or the belief in him, doesn't stop us from committing a crime or taking another life. Many people have started wars in the name of God and their religion. In my opinion, God wouldn't condone thousands of people dying over a piece of land that some people consider sacred, but it isn't my moral code that's in jeopardy; it's the people who are fighting the wars that have to deal with their consciences.
             That's what it all comes down to, what our consciences tell us. Atheists have consciences, just like all of the Christians. This is what keeps them in line. This is the uniting factor that ties all humans together. When the conscience is ignored, and all moral laws are thrown aside is when we have our problems, not when the belief in God vanishes, and that's what this writer is suggesting when he says that "If God did not exist then all things are permissible."
