I had a Little League coach in 1996 that led our team to a Michigan state championship. He was a true leader, with important leadership qualities. He was out to accomplish the same goal as my team was-to win ball games. This man was always looking to do what was best for the team, and he had the support of the entire team.
             During one game in the state tournament, his son was struggling out on the mound. Rather than playing the part of a father, he played the part of a coach and a leader. He took his son off the mound, and put in a relief pitcher for the good of the team. He was a great and effective leader.
             Within In Dubious Battle, Mac proves himself as a terrible leader. He was not striking for the same reasons as the workers, he did not have the patronage of many of the strikers, and his dim-witted tactics did little to help the cause of the apple pickers.
             Mac claimed to work for the Party in order to help his fellow human beings, but his means of accomplishing that feat was by stirring up strikes and boycotts. " 'But God damn it, Jim, if we could get the National Guard called out, now with the crops coming ready, we'd have the whole district organized by spring.' " (39) Mac didn't mention anything about that occurrence doing any good for the pickers. Was he really out to help his brothers and sisters? His job in life, his means of living, consisted of planting ideas in the heads of lower class people, so that they might fight for better treatment. Yet, going into Torgas Valley, Mac doubted that the apple pickers would win the battle for better wages. " 'Well, suppose,' Jim insisted, 'suppose the owners do meet the demands?' (Mac responds,) 'I don't think they will.' " (38) His main purpose for going down there was obviously to kindle trouble.
