When I think of domestic abuse I think of television shows like Jerry Springer and Maury. Today, Americans turn stories of domestic violence into entertainment. Personally, I think it's utterly disgusting. Domestic violence is an issue that isn't taken as seriously as it should be. Although, I'm sure most of these shows are scripted, how do they reflect on American society?
Violence and aggression among Americans is pretty common. Over half of 100,000 people surveyed admitted to have been sexually or physically abused. Violence is becoming more common in adolescents. Research indicates that males exhibit higher levels of aggression than females. This is because males are raised to reach a standard of toughness, and masculinity. Females, on the other hand, are raised to be more vocal about their issues rather than physical. Feelings of depression, unimportance, or inferiority can lead to violent behavior.
Society affects the violence level in adolescents as well. Growing up watching violent TV shows can lead to a more aggressive adulthood, because children think that's the "norm". The children's interactions with their parents also affect how aggressive they will grow up to be. If a child's parents are abusive, or tend to be more violent, the child will grow up thinking it's okay to be the same way. It's unhealthy for a child to grow up in a household that allows violence, or abuse. For entertainment Americans watch horrific stories of abuse and tragedies. What happened to the innocent TV days of I Love Lucy, or The Brady Bunch?
As American media changes so does American society. In the times before television, Americans were less aggressive, and more family orientated.
