Our modern day society and our way of life is how we developed more from what the puritans were before. The way we live and grow up is also the clear picture of how the puritans live their lives. The education that is taught to our children, their way of life and social beliefs, marriage, the work ethics and performance, religious thoughts and practices, and the way the laws are enforced are what condition that is still continuing to shape the American dream.
The education system of today was from constant development and through hard work throughout the years to what it is today from the puritans. The system of the puritans was simple, strict, and taught at home from parents or close relatives because the puritans believe that the education in a school environment were taken advantage by the students to escape from the hard work and that it did not educate the students well. In the book "Education in America" by authors James Monroe Hughes and Frederick Marshall Schultz writes "The puritans felt that education as it had been conducted up to that time resulted in the creation of a class more ready to exploit than to serve, that it had acted as an alley of escape from the rigors work, and that it did not adequately educate the pupil to meet conscientiously the requirements of a responsible and participant citizenship that the times demanded." With that explained, it is suggested that the students receive most of their education in the home under the guidance of the parents. The education that was taught to the children was limited to reading, writing, and arithmetic. Also, the materials that were being taught were expected to stay fresh in the children mind or spanking would occur.
