Don Juan

While I am a strong proponent for women playing men's roles, doing so for the sake of being ridiculously artsy and nouveau is just plain ridiculous. A good portion of the male characters were played by females, and certainly not vice versa. Don Diego Tenorio, Duke Octavio, Don Pedro Tenorio, and Don Gonzalo Ulloa are all played by women. Women were cast in such a way to be part of a dream-concept by the director, Oscar Giner. I disagree with this method, but I disagree with every concept idea of his. At any rate, what the play lacked in character research, elasticity and coherence, it almost made up for in set design.
There is a big, fat line between ethereal pseudo-conviction and artistic chance and leeway; Oscar Giner has leapt over that line, yet again, with a huge flag saying "PRETENTION" and the play he directed, Don Juan. I haven't had the chance to read the script, but with his much talked about 'vision', does anyone really think he followed the writer's intention? I won't delve into hearsay, that would just be unfair. There's only one thing more unfair than that, though; subjection of the audience to a wholly unappetizing, poorly directed piece...fortunately for us, we're beginning to take note of his routine, what with Fly Photo Tombstone.
Another big thorn in the foot of the beast called Don Juan was Oscar's choice to cast himself as Death. Could it be anymore fitting of a part for a man whose creative input I have no ear for? Albeit, I bet he could slap something really spectacular together with all those funny little thoughts in his head, but this potential talent is wasted on humankind; he should try using this on the spirits he's trying to channel.
Oscar's concept was unclear (per usual), but I believe it had something to do with love and loss...maybe sadness...pirates? Dreaming, Satan, good vs. evil...church vs. state? I really don't know, ...
