We still hear Rose talking as she finishes her sentence, "¡Kand it was, it really was." The music then builds up from eerie music to a crescendo, as the shot of the wreck in the gloomy depths of the ocean, dissolves into an image of the Titanic in its former glory. Dissolves are generally used to indicate either a passage of time or a change of location; in this case it indicates both to the viewer. The shot goes from low-key lighting into high-key, which changes the mood from gloomy to hopeful. Rose is having a flashback to the past.
             Rose DeWitt Bukater is a 17 year-old, upper class American suffocating under the rigid confines and expectations of Edwardian society. She is the fiancée of Cal and daughter of Ruth. Rose narrates the film as a very old lady and we see things from her point of view through voice-overs and flashbacks. This means the narrative style is subjective rather than objective, as we are getting one person's particular view of events. This means it could have a certain amount of bias but because the audience sympathises with Rose's character we tend to believe what she is telling us. It also makes it quite overt as the narrative is made obvious to the audience. The fact that the film is based on real events means that the audience gets a 'head-start' as they already have an idea of the film's narrative. This also means that the film contains a lot of dramatic irony and tension because the audience knows more than the characters know. Titanic has a clearly defined main plot and sub plot. The main plot being the voyage of the Titanic, and the sub plot being the romance between Jack and Rose, which has the traditional 'boy meets girl' structure.
