             Audiences today are expected to be quiet and appreciate the performance but in Elizabethan times they would shout insults if they disapproved the play. To contradict this, audiences of today can not appreciate Shakespearean plays without knowing about the Christian religion i.e. The Divine Right of Kings; this applies to Shakespeare's Hamlet, Where Claudius kills the king. (Who according to the Divine rite of kings is God's representative on earth.) This is why it was such a sin. Elizabethan audiences would have been very shocked and horrified after seeing "Hamlet".
             The stage in theatres in the round was set out in a certain way and every one in Elizabethan times knew this layout. Below the stage was hell, a place where ghosts and demons came from. A ghost or demon would be represented by a voice from below the stage. Now we use technology to create ghostly images, this is much more convincing than a voice coming from under the stage. Elizabethan's were very superstitious and did not take much convincing. The stage represents where humans live, sometimes a balcony would be used in scenes. Now we can set scenes anywhere by filming at locations. Land still applies as a place where humans live but many different scenes can be set. Above the stage in an Elizabethan theatre there would be a canopy with pictures to represent the sun sky and the heavens. Again we can film on location at any time and lighting is used to represent night and day when in the theatre.
