Claggart. Claggart, much like Iago in Othello, shows no purpose behind his desire to destroy Billy.
             John Claggart approaches the Captain one day after a failed attempt of catching and destroying a French frigate. After the chase after the frigate is abandoned, Claggart approaches Captain Vere and accuses Billy of disloyalty to the captain and his fellow officers. Claggart claims that he overheard Billy conspiring with other crew members of his desire to over throw the ship and its officers in an attempt of mutiny. This is a charge that would result in death of the conspirators
