The principle of civilization is the division of labor for this to be effective it must be covered in constitution of the state. According to Plato, there are three main functions of society production, defense, and government. The three classes society are the citizens or producers, fighters, and the governors who constitute the political aspect of Plato's society. Each class will have the "specific virtue temperance, regarded primarily as obedience, in the producers; courage in the fighters; and wisdom in the governors." Additionally, Plato's fourth virtue, "justice, will be the effective principle of organization that keeps each class in its place and binds the whole together into one body politic."
To prevent temptation of greed or tyranny, the two higher classes are to be deprived of all property beyond a few personal necessities. Hence, the common producer (citizen could not own land according to Plato's Republic. Their wives are to be in "common, and women are to partake, so far as their weaker nature permits, in all the employments of men." The wisdom of the governors is will "rise into that pure region of philosophy wherein the ordinary interests of the world are lost in the contemplation of eternal ideas."
Plato was an elitist who opposed democracy and was hostile to the masses, fills the literature of the Republic. According to James Adam, in 1902 he speaks of the Republic and includes the following observation: "The theory of Ideas is not a democratic philosophy." He wrote to respond to an interchange between Socrates and Adeimantus concerning the access of the many to the idea or form of the Good, during which Socrates claims: "It is impossible for the multitude to be philosophic."
