             Harriet Tubman was raised and slaved in Tidewater Maryland. They gave her the name of Araminta, Minta, or Minty. Her parents were Harriet Greene, also known as Rit, and Benjamin Ross, also known as Ben. The slaves in Maryland would tell time by the sun; sun up, sun high, sun down. There years were not divided by months but by seasons; Seedtime, Cotton Blossom time, Harvest, Christmas. The years were divided by the things that happened; the year... the master died, new mast was born, the big storm, early frost, long drought.
             Slaves in Maryland would always talk about freedom. Some say that if you could escape to the north you could become free, or if the master manumits them they would be free when he died for working so hard in the fields while the master was alive. If a slave were to runaway to the north and get caught they would whip them severely and brand them with an R or send them to the chain-gang. Harriet Tumban was not too lucky when she grew up; she did not get to work in the house and nurse nor did she get to sow but she had to work in the fields plowing, carting, and driving the oxen with the rest of her family. In Harriet's youth she received a sever blow which was severe for a long time, and made her very lethargic. She was married about 1844 to a free colored man named John Tubman, but never had any children. While Harriet would be working in the fields a woman would come by and remind her that if ever she needed anything the woman lived right down the road and she told Harriet don't ever hesitate to ask for anything.
             Harriet's owner decided to sell her a few weeks later but had a difficult time because her health was so injured, that a purchaser was not easily found.
