The Crucible

             In Arthur Miller's play, "The Crucible", the people of Salem are very concerned with the truth, the truth is different depending on who is telling it, and people use their version of the truth to benefit themselves. Three people in the play use the accusations of witches to portray their true natures. They are Mr. And Mrs. Putnam, and Reverend Parris.
             Thomas Putnam uses his perspective of the truth to serve himself. He is a prosperous land owns who seeks power. He is very bitter because his support of his brother- in – law for the job of minister was defeated. He took the defeat as a personal insult. He felt that his name and honor of his family was threatened. He begins accusing other people of being witches in hope that they hang, because once their dead he can buy their land. In the play Giles Cory accuses Putnam of prompting his daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs, who is now in jail. Putnam denies it but Giles says " In Jacob hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property-that's law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!"
             Ann Putnam accuses Rebecca Nurse of being a witch. Rebecca Nurse has had many children and grandchildren, while Ann lost six out of seven kids. Her motive is revenge for not being able to have a healthy child. She accuses Rebecca of killing her babies by evil spirits in order to rid the guilt she feels for having lost all those children.
             Reverend Parris believes he is persecuted wherever his goes. He was originally a businessman from Barbados who moved to Massachusetts to become a reverend. He does whatever it takes to keep his good name. He originally found the girls in the woods that were practicing witchcraft. He covers it up by saying evil spirits were upon them. He doesn't want anyone in his family associated with witchcraft in fear that he will be assoc...
