Imagine driving home from a hard day of work, expecting to get home to your husband, who always gets home before you, hugging and kissing you as you walk through the door. Instead, you arrive home to find it very unusual that he is not yet home. About an hour later, he finally comes home and uses the excuse that he was stuck in traffic. Being the understanding wife you are, you blow it off and give him that hug and kiss you had been waiting for. Meanwhile, your husband feels smooth because he knows inside that he was, in fact not stuck in traffic, but out with another woman. "No One's a Mystery," by Elizabeth Tallent, portrays the message that things are not always as they seem, and sometimes the things we do not yet know or realize are the things that will affect us the most.
             Elizabeth Tallents, "No One's a Mystery" focuses mainly on two characters. Jack, who is a married man, and a young eighteen year old girl. On this girls eighteenth birthday Jack gives her a diary to write in. During this same time, they happened to be driving in Jack's truck, drinking tequila, when he noticed his wife driving towards them. The only reason he knew it was his wife was because she always kept her lights on, even during the day (5). I think that Jack has been married for so long that being with this younger girl makes him feel young and attractive again. I feel that he is so used to his everyday routine with his wife that he can predict such things as, that she will make meat loaf for supper that night (5). Being with this girl gives him a thrill, sense of adventure, and a change of pace. This also shows that his wife is a little naive and in her head they have a storybook marriage. As Jack's wife drove past him, the girl was pushed to the floor so she wouldn't be seen (5). Jack seems to not be mature enough to accept the consequences of being caught by his wife.
