Effective Coaching

             Being a young adult it is hard to encounter many situations pertaining to effective supervision, to this point in life. Most young adults have had encounters at part-time jobs, summer jobs, school, or through organized sports. As an athlete and enjoyment of working with others to improve skills and knowledge, I was drawn to become a coach for Waterloo Minor Hockey. To become a coach one must go through a certification program to learn the necessities of teaching skills that will lay the foundation for future coaching experiences. The program focuses on helping players develop the basic hockey skills such as; skating, puck handling, stopping, passing, turning and shooting. Some of the ways in which participants benefit include; having fun, learning basic skills needed to play hockey, learning concepts of co-operation and fair play, developing an understanding of teamwork while making hockey a very positive and fun-filled activity. These are basic gains but in a manner more beneficial to effective supervision effective coaching is an important characteristic for a supervisor a coach can continue their growth as a supervisor by taking additional courses. The higher level courses are designed to help a coach improve in areas such as:

             „X how to build self-esteem in athletes
             „X caring for injuries and practising risk management
             „X understanding growth and development
             „X how the body works and physical training
             „X analyzing skill progression
             „X understanding and instruction of goaltending
