The novel "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad written in 1902 and the movie "Apocalypse Now" by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979 are similar in many ways. Many of the settings and the plot of the movie are taken directly from the novel. Although there are many differences in general if you read the book and watch the movie you can tell they are much alike. Both the author of the book and the director of the movie use many of the same visual effects to accentuate the theme of the story. The movie is most definitely based around the novel, and by reading and watching the two stories, it is quite obvious that Francis Ford Coppola was a fan of the novel "Heart of Darkness."
             In both stories, the idea of light and dark plays a major role in the scenes. In the novel, there are so many different descriptions of it being dark and dreary. The novel makes it seem that the trip on this river is one of the worst trips a man could have taken. The movie is based on the same concept. In the movie, many of the scenes are very dark, and even some of them are hard to see by someone watching the video. For example, a major part of the movie that shows the light and dark is when Captain Williard meets Kurtz and the movie is shot during the night time, it's raining, and the visuals from the camera are very difficult for the viewer even to see. Both Marlow and Captain Williard tell the audience about how either of them has ever been on a journey like the one they are on. Captain Williard is speaking at the beginning of the movie, and he says "I would never want to take another one like it again" this is referring to the journey on the river. His mission is to kill Kurtz who is an ex-army soldier because Kurtz has decided to leave the army's pack and now is forming an army of his own. Captain Williard explains while on the boat several times about how this mission to kill one of his own is going to be very difficult.
