Title "Hills Like White Elephants" Author: Earnest Hemingway
             This story focuses in on a brief and casual; yet intimate conversation between a couple. Involving a young Spanish lady named Jig, and an older gentleman, that remains nameless. This conversation begins with the description of their location, within the train station, in the middle of the desert, and no trees in sight. The story advances with the conversational dialogue between the couple. What seems to be a mere debate, but has a much deeper surface. Jig and her boyfriend, discuss her decision to move forward with an abortion. As the conversation continues, Jig becomes even more upset, as her boyfriend persistently tries to convince her, everything will be all right. During their talk, Jig begins to describe the land in which surrounds them. She speaks of the land, and it's features, while secretly describing herself. Jig enlightens that the hills are covered with trees and grains, in which both she and the gentleman could have. In the same breath, Jig indicates the hills appeared as white elephants. All of these were a representation of Jig's fertility, and her consensus of not wanting to be alone if she decided to have this child or an unwanted 'White Elephant.' In the conclusion of the conversation, Jig becomes very agitated with her boyfriend. It becomes evident when Jig rudely interrupts her boyfriend's statement, by asking that they stop talking. After throwing a temper tantrum, the boyfriend leaves to put the bags away, and returns to his seat. He questioned if Jig was feeling any better. She curtly responded stating she was feeling fine. The story leaves an implied message that Jig proceeded with the abortion. However, we do not know the ending. Either guided by love for her boyfriend, or by the fear of being rejected, this story leaves a lasting impression.
