Barbara Ehrenreich's experiment into the world of low-class American citizens enlightens me on a situation that is far to common in today's society. I found it interesting that a woman could be so ignorant of her own success and money that she would have the luxury of diving into the world of poverty by choice. Unfortunately those who belong to that social class do not choose poverty. It is oftentimes the result of lack of education, laziness, or bad circumstances. To give an overall opinion on the book, I would have to say that I was disappointed in the entire experiment from the beginning. I just don't believe that Ms. Ehrenreich has any clue as to what poor people in America truly deal with on a day-to-day basis.
             There are several reasons as to why I believe that Barbara Ehrenreich's experiment is flawed. The first is the presence of a second alternative. If she began to feel overwhelmed by either the lack of money, job-related stresses, or a combination of several hardships, Barbara had the life of luxury to fall back on. So many times the constant worry about where the next meal is going to come from, or where will my family be able to sleep tonight pushes the poor to the ultimate edge. Suicidal tendencies are frequent occurrences amongst the lower class in the United States. Due to her circumstances outside of the experiment Barbara never dealt with those psychological tremors.
             The second thing that was not involved in the experiment was lack of family. During Barbara's experiment, she was only concerned with her well-being. This is not the case for the majority of lower class citizens. For example, it is much more difficult for a single mother to make sure that her children are getting to school, doing their homework, behaving in school, eating healthy, and not to mention safe while she works several jobs to keep a roof over her family's head.
