Career: Creative Writer

             I want to be a freelance creative writer (science fiction) because I have always loved writing. I have more full notebooks with funky colored ink than Cher has pairs of shoes. When I asked my roommate what my ideal job should be (I always love an outside opinion), she said science fiction writer. I asked her why and she answered that I'm always writing and I know enough about science fiction to make me a "nerd". Writing is very therapeutic, even under pressure.
             What can I offer? My own creativity blended with personal experiences and opinions. You can use creative writing to make a bold statement in subtle terms. I've had a lot of experience in creative writing. I have written over 30 poems, at least 20 short stories and a novella. At current, I am writing a second novella. I would love to be able to support myself by writing.
             Information on job statistics for creative writers is sparse, as it is largely a freelance career. Many writers have a second job to support themselves. Salary varies greatly, from twenty dollars for having a story published in an unknown magazine to thousands of dollars for having a book published. Also, because it is freelance, there is no certainty of a paycheck from month to month. You get money when writing is sold. The job market varies from year to year, but is extremely competitive. To have a fiction book published, your writing has to be top notch. Only the best writers are even able to get agents and then only the best of those are able to find a publisher willing to publish their book. There are typically (in freelance) no "requirements" in terms of certifications or degrees. Most creative writers have a degree in English, but not all.
