In the story "The Yellow Wallpaper" Charlotte Perkins Gilman use very powerful descriptive language to describe some of the events or settings in the story. Gilman uses personification, similes, and metaphors to let the reader in to the story and to feel what is happening. One passage that is particularly well written is on the bottom of page 666 where Gilman is describing how the front pattern in the room really does move. "The front pattern does move- and no wonder! The woman behind shakes it!" Gilman goes on with saying, "And she is all the time trying to climb through the that pattern-it strangles so; I think that is why it has so many heads." "They get through, and then the pattern strangles them off and turns them upside down, and makes their eyes white." The personification and metaphors that Gilman uses in the passage to draw the reader into what it is like for that woman in the room.
             Why is Gilman letting us see the pattern actually cutting the peoples heads off? This passage is letting us into the mind of what it could be like to be crazy and trapped with no place to go. In this passage Gilman makes the pattern in the room seem like it is a jail cell that is alive and brutal. Gilman uses this type of language to help us get a better idea of what it must be like for someone who is crazy. " Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over." " Then in the very bright spots she keeps still, and in the very shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard." The fact that Gilman says it seems there is more than one person in the room is one of the ways he lets us know the lady is going crazy without coming right out and telling us.
