There are two small, deep voiced drums called the Totogi and Kroboto." (Chernoff 43) These instruments, combined with chanting and or choruses, are what African music is based on.
             Based on research, the most influential part of Africa, as far as music is concerned, comes from West Africa. This is, coincidentally, where the majority of slaves that were taken to America came from. The earliest account of music in African society is from English Captain Richard Jobson who visited Gambia from 1620 through 1621. "Upon returning to London in 1963, Jobson published a book entitled The Golden Trade or a Discovery of the River Gambra and the Golden Trade of the Aethiopians (Southern 4).
