a. Who does Socrates name as his accusers? What are the charges brought against him by each? Meletus and the People of Athens. The charges are:
people: That there was a man called Socrates, a wise man, a student of all things in the sky and below the earth, who make the worse argument the stronger. Meletus: corrupting the youth (he teaches these same things to others for a fee) and not believing in the cities of gods.
b. What explanation does Socrates give for his unpopularity? He says their upset because the kids aren't getting education. He is studying what he shouldn't study. That there was a man called Socrates, a wise man, a student of all things in the sky and below the earth, who make the worse argument the stronger. This is bad b/c these people have been accusing the jurors since they were younger children...more vulnerable.
c. Does Socrates believe himself to be wise? Not at first, He starts questioning those in the city who think they're smart he thinks are smart, but then he realizes that they don't know much. Socrates thinks the reason his rumors evolved were: Human Wisdom. But he can't explain it, b/c he doesn't have it. Witnesses: Oracle...Pythian said that Socrates was the wisest man alive. Socrates thought another man was wiser, so they conversed, and discovered that the other man thought he knew stuff, but he didn't, whereas Socrates knew he didn't know stuff. Then the man hated him..more men hated him...unpopular.
d. How does Socrates respond to each of the accusations brought against him by Meletus? CORRUPTION OF THE YOUTH: (horse analogy) Forget the youth: of all the people, how many people can make really good horses? Only 1 or 2.
i. Does not do it deliberately...why would he corrupt them if he knew they were going to harm him?
ii. How could only one person corrupt a group? How is everyone in Athens making the youth good while one person is making them corru...
