The miners have decided to strike, they are fed up and are not going to take the abuse anymore. The song establishes a feeling of hope and strength, almost a sense that success is right around the corner even though the movie has just begun. The opening song is an exception the rule however. There really isn't that much music in the film as a whole, which seems to lend more power to the times that tunes are played. Also, almost all the music throughout the rest of the film is diegetic, meaning the music takes place within the story space.
