istening process is much more complex and is not learned or put into action easily. Listening not only entails hearing and understanding. When you listen you have to make meaning and sense from verbal and nonverbal messages. A good listener cannot just sit and look, a good listener has to demonstrate understanding. Eye contact, body language, and other non-verbal gestures (such as leaning forward to show attention is being paid) are very important in showing true interest and concern for what is being communicated.
             Selecting, understanding, remembering, and responding are all parts of the listening process. When you select, you have to sort through information you are being given, as well as noise around you. In a family situation noise could be the baby crying, a dog barking or dinner burning. To communicate effectively, you have to get away from the noise. Set aside a time to talk about things that are important or about problems that arise. Understanding is when you put meaning to what you are selecting. When you understand you are also interpreting what you have heard. Usually it is easy to understand if you can relate what the person is saying to something you already know. When you remember, you have to retrieve the information from your memory.
