The article that we read was titled "What's the matter with kids today? They're all asleep." I agree with this article completely. The first few paragraphs describe my life almost perfectly. I stay up late talking to my friends online and convince my mom that I'm not tired at 10 and I don't need to go to sleep. When I read this part of the article I agreed fully with the writer about teenagers needing more sleep than what they are getting. The article says that most teenagers are barely getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep when what they really need is 9 or 10. I also agree with the part of the article that says that not getting enough sleep effects your schoolwork. If I go to bed at 11 and I get up to go to school at 7 I always feel exhausted and I can't focus. I find myself yawning in class and desperately trying to keep my eyes open. If I go to sleep at 9 or 10 I feel a lot more rested and I can concentrate much better during school. The problem is I seldom go to sleep earlier than 11. After playing sports, watching T.V., or talking online till 9 o'clock I usually start my homework, sometimes not finishing it until 10:30 or later. The next morning I am so exhausted that I can barely get out of bed.
The part of the article I agree most strongly with is the part about making schools start later. Starting school at 9 o'clock instead of 7:55 would give most people an extra hour of sleep and help students to focus better in morning classes. Teenagers would probably do much better in school if they could still go to sleep at 10 or 11 but wake up an hour later and be able to eat breakfast and be awake when school started. Even if I go to sleep at 9, having to be awake and focused at 8 in the morning is almost impossible. I think it would help me a lot to start school at 8:30 or 9.
