             Jefferson often would try to justify the treatment of slaves in the United States by saying their treatment is far better than the slaves in Rome. For instance, "When a master was murdered, all his slaves in the house , or within hearing, were condemned to death" (294). In America supposedly the punishment was only to be placed on the guilty person and once there was proof of the injustice being wrong, the accused person is to be free of all charges against him/ her.
