Achilles and Hector are both great warriors, but Hector is the more heroic. According to Encarta Encyclopedia, heroic means "Nobly or selflessly brave." Based on this definition, Hector is definitely more heroic than Achilles. Hector fights selflessly for his people, even to the end. For example, even when Hector learns that the collective will of the gods is against him, he keeps fighting. Achilles, when wronged by Agamemnon, stops fighting because of personal issues. If Achilles was truly selfless, he would not let his pride and anger get in the way of serving his people.
             Regardless of his heroism, Hector is not without faults of his own. When outside of the city gates, Hector's family pleads with him to come inside the city gates. Hector refuses, not only because he is brave, but also because he is too prideful. Both Achilles and Hector suffer from pride, as well as the pursuit of honor, which is closely linked with pride. Honor and glory are what is strived for by Greek and Trojan warriors, and it is also a large weakness in both Hector and Achilles' character. However, Achilles is driven by much more than pride and lust for glory. While pride is a large flaw in Achilles character, rage and anger drive him. When Achilles killed Hector, rage and anger drove him to desecrate his body. Achilles' desecration of Hector's body was not necessary, reflects how badly Achilles is driven by these emotions.
             Even though they have both have shortcomings, Hector and Achilles has numerous positive qualities. Both Achilles and Hector show great prowess on the battlefield. Achilles seems to drive enemies back at will, and Hector is nothing short of magnificent. Even though rage and anger drive his actions, Achilles does fight valiantly on the side of the Aecheans.
