Silence is usually appreciated. The majority of people have the gift of speech. The most common way of breaking the much appreciated silence is through talking. Much of the population uses speech for expressing their emotions or thoughts or for asking questions. These ways of using talking are perfectly understandable and make much sense. But occasionally, people speak for nothing by asking mindless questions while the teacher is away. The proverb that states that a wise man is only considered wise because he says nothing and he would show the fool he is if he opened his mouth is well suited for a situation like this.
Silence is important for paying respect to people. It is not deferential to disturb someone who is speaking and communicating his/her thoughts or knowledge. It is also not polite to make slurping sounds while drinking soup or to talk while eating. During a movie, sharing opinions is as rude as trying to get every last drop of coke through a straw. To stop someone from talking in the middle of a sentence because one wants to convey his/her own thoughts is very rude.
Quietness is also valued and required when reflecting about something. It is important to be quiet when people are praying to pay respect to people's beliefs. It is also very difficult to concentrate on a test or on homework if someone is making noise. When reading a book, the presence of silence is very convenient. When focusing on a video game, if someone makes a sudden noise, it will affect the person's reflexes. This will cause that person to falter and the words game over will appear on the screen. When driving, disruptions from other people in the car or from a cell phone can distract the driver.
