The Process of Doing an Automobile Oil Change

             Taking care of an automobile is very simple. Filling a car up with gasoline and changing the oil are the basics for maintaining a car's engine. Changing gasoline is easy. The car's gasoline tank gets low and all it requires is a one-step fill up at the gas station. The process of an oil change is much more complex. Most cars and motorcycles have physical indicators indicating the oil needs to be checked. Checking the oil tank manually is a more efficient way to determine the need for an oil change. Under the hood of the car, you must locate the oil dipstick, which is the device that measures the amount of oil in the engine. Lift the dipstick so it is completely exposed, wipe the dipstick clean with a rag and place the dipstick back. Pull up the dipstick once more and this will give you a proper measurement of how much oil is in the engine. If oil appears above the indicated line on the dipstick the oil does not need to be changed. If the oil is below the line an oil change is necessary.

An oil change by the car owner at home will cost only about twelve dollars. Any auto parts store will have the items necessary for the oil change. The items that are needed for an oil change are four or five quarts of motor oil and an oil filter. The manual that comes with the car will indicate how much, and what type of oil the engine requires. Usually, a car takes four or five quarts of motor oil, and a truck will need six or seven quarts. The auto parts store will also have a manual to help you choose the correct filter for the car. The tools needed to change the oil and filter are not uncommon tools.
