"She was so beautiful"(113). In the short story "Long Long After School"
the character of Miss Tretheway is well developed, she is a kind and respectable
woman. She was important in helping Wes through school and life. I think Miss
Tretheway knew what Wes was going through, and she seemed to understand his
pain and how to make him feel better. Miss Tretheway was a lot like Wes when she
Miss Tretheway understood what was going through Wes's mind
while he was being teased and tormented by his fellow class mates, and knew how
to cure his emotional scars. I know this because Wes said, " I was taking Mrs.
Banks's wash home on my sled, and you were coasting down the hill. The Basket
upset and all the things fell out..... Miss Tretheway cam along and you all ran. She
helped me pick up the stuff and shake the snow off it. She went with me right to
Mrs.Banks's door and told her what happened"(114). What also happened was, Wes
punched a hole through a window, and was going to bleed to death, but Miss
Tretheway came and saved him from certain death. She even gave him her blood
once she found out eachothers blood was the same. She said to Wes, "I didn't know
whether an old maids blood would be any good to a fine young specimen like you,
Wes, or not"(115,116). While playing a game in the school yard, a young girl would
not hold Wes's hand, because she said he was dirty. Miss Tretheway said to the little
girl, "Why, Marilyn, Wes's hands are much cleaner than yours...."(114). She also
made them hold hands and she took the other hand of Wes. Miss Tretheway really
cared for Wes and protected him from the other students, she seemed to be like a
