Genetic Engineering: A Persuasive Essay

One chemical holds the secret of life. It contains the instructions for manufacturing everything from bacteria to a human being with trillions of specialized or genetically altered cells. The chemical is called deoxyribonucleic acid, or what is better known as DNA. It is about to change our world or has already begun to do so. But is the change that comes with it worth the effects it could have on society?
I don't think that genetically altering DNA or genetically engineering something is a good idea. One reason is that it could pose a serious threat to the existence of life on earth. Once we started to genetically alter living systems, where would we draw the line? We could just manufacture people's bodies and design them exactly how we want them to look and act. In time, it will become much harder to argue against adding genes that contribute to desired qualities, like better health, looks or brains. If we eliminate all of our imperfections and defects, we would be forced to accept the idea of reducing the human species to a technologically designed product. I don't think that guaranteeing our health is worth trading away our humanity.
Also, genetic engineering creates great risks. If we disturb the balance of Nature, the imbalance will occur in the fertility and growth of craps and their consumers which happens to be wildlife, farm animals, and human beings. Some of the other risks that genetic engineering could cause include the accidental release of harmful organisms, but also problems resulting from the deliberate release of organisms such as bacterial pesticides. These problems include the survival, growth, and distribution of such bacteria with long-term harmful ecological results that can't be effectively planned. Without fully understanding all the effects the genetic engineering will have on something we shouldn't take the chance to disrupt society's way of life.
Genetic engineering also has its benefits. Using ge...
