Growing up I saw the roles of each gender different, but equally important and challenging. My parents had the task of raising and supporting seven children. At times it was very difficult, it still is today. Their duties very distinctly different, but at the same time connected. My dad took the role of provider and disciplinary, my mother was the nurturer and the person that held the family together. My parents joined together to instill the morals and convictions that each of us carry with us today.
             My father always seemed to be working. Sanders illustrates how I saw my father when he said " They got up before light, worked all day long whatever the weather, and when they came home at night they looked as though somebody had been whipping them" (12). My father worked three jobs when I was young, he really had no choice if he wanted to provide for us the things we needed: food, clothes, and good education. Because he worked so much my father was hardly ever home during the day. We would only see him for an hour during dinner then he would run off to the next job and not get home until late at night. He never complained about his duties as our father. He showed my that life was full of responsibilities and in order to make it you must fulfill your responsibility. He instilled in me a good work ethic, but most important he showed how to be a good father. However, my personality and compassion came from somewhere else.
             While my dad was out working to provide us with a fruitful life, my mother was at home working to make sure we were taken care of during the day and teaching us how to be kind and caring people. I saw the role of women the same as Sanders did, at home with the kids and running errands, but unlike Sanders I never saw their jobs as easy.
