Beowulf

             Is the age of Beowulf a distant mirror image of our own age, or is the society of Beowulf simply a sample of pure fiction? Numerous aspects of Beowulf's society could be symbolically observed and compared to those aspects of the our own society. A few of these comparing aspects within Beowulf and our culture are battles, evil and corruption, and cruel-natured kings, or rulers. The stories or images portrayed within Beowulf can be viewed as near replicates of the images within our own age.
             Beowulf's numerous battles with the grotesque monsters surprisingly resemble the main wars of the twentieth century. The fact that a myriad of men join Beowulf in combat, parallel the number of nations who join together to help another country during war. World War II is an excellent example of this aspect.              Hermod could be described as a present day Hitler, while in contrast, Beowulf could be compared to a present day Teddy Roosevelt. Like Hitler, Hermod was so concerned about his own appearance and accomplishments, his life became grueling and "...misery after misery." Hermod's lack of generosity and concern for his own people's welfare, led to his downfall, like that of the notorious Hitler.
