Stem Cells

Scientists are always trying to find new ways to help cure humans of problems like cancer, or disease. Experiments are the most common way to try and find if a new treatment works. Many times new treatments are tested on animals before humans. After these are made sure to work on animals, humans are the next step. Human testing has caused an argument. A lot of people believe that it is wrong to experiment on humans because one will never know the outcome. Others say that we must experiment on humans or we will never be able to make new breakthroughs.
It takes a very long time for a new treatment to even be ready for human testing. First a treatments are tested on animals, like rats. People don't just get a shot with a new vaccine in it. The Doctor first tells them of everything that can happen to them. The person must agree, and they are usually paid a generous amount of money for their time and cooperation. Once they are given the new medication, the doctor keeps a very close eye on the patient and makes sure nothing goes wrong. Human testing is a very serious thing that is not taken lightly.
One of the most common experimental treatments for humans nowadays is stem cell research. Stem cells are expected to cure many major illnesses with humans. Although the idea of using stem cells have been around for a very long time, stem cells are not a very common treatment for humans. The first stem cell transplant was done almost 100 years ago. Bone marrow (which is made of stem cells) was given by mouth to patients who were infected with anemia or leukemia. This treatment was found to be ineffective but many other ways were found to use these stem cells (History of Stem Cell Transplants). The reason stem cells are not a common treatment is because not enough is known yet to use them regularly on humans. However, they are used a lot for experimental purposes on humans and animals.
